An invitation from Susan Ribnick for her introductory course!
Paths and Trails: Charting your course with Smalti, mixed media and wood.
Why Paths and Trails? Because this course uses organically cut grooves routed out of beautiful walnut and mahogany wood to make your own creative design within a ‘path’.
It’s a study in contrasting materials, creativity within confines and poses a novel design challenge.
Materials that will be provided are
-pre-routed wood pieces of varying shapes. Contemporary MDF pieces are available as well.
-smalti
-Oceanside Glass tile
-gold and silver wire for wrapping tessera
-stone
-Swarovski crystal pieces
- thinset
You are welcome to bring other materials to use in the making of your path design. Bring your favorite nippers.
I have always loved the saying “The Path is made by Walking” and this applies to our creative process as well as we learn by actually doing and forging a creative way forward.

To get philosophical about the idea of making a path and leaving a trail see one of my favorite poems by Antonio Machado
Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino y nada más;
Caminante, no hay camino,
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace el camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino
sino estelas en la mar.
Traveler, your footprints
are the only road, nothing else.
Traveler, there is no road;
you make your own path as you walk.
As you walk, you make your own road,
and when you look back
you see the path
you will never travel again.
Traveler, there is no road;
only a ship's wake on the sea.
Antonio Machado
I look forward to seeing you all and sharing these lovely media and materials with you.
Intermediate Course will follow.
