Phyllis Akmal

Phyllis Akmal, Austin, Texas

Phyllis began her mosaic education in 2009, but her passion for and interest in the art of mosaics began many years ago. Visiting and studying mosaic sites in Italy and Turkey have inspired her love for this ancient and intricate art. Phyllis has taken workshops and classes in Chicago, with visiting artists in Austin, and at the conference of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, of which she is a member. Also a member of the Austin Mosaic Guild, Phyllis has assisted with many community mosaic projects including Barton Hills Elementary and O’Henry School.

She says, “I am a patient and encouraging teacher and receive much satisfaction from instructing beginning students in mosaic skills, techniques, and use of tools.” Her goal is to assist students to gain confidence, experience, and develop their artistic strengths. Phyllis instructs students in how to work with various materials including stained glass, tile, broken china, smalti, and tempered glass. She advises students how to select materials and translate a design into a mosaic while also learning the mechanics of mosaic construction.

Stephanie Shroyer, Schulenberg, Texas

Creating mosaics gives me such peace, it calms my overactive mind! There’s something about assembling something new, a piece of art, from something broken that is truly rewarding. I love creating fun and functional art for both your indoor and outdoor living spaces, in both mosaic as well as my concrete medium. Having taken a break from mosaic for 10 years to explore the concrete medium, I am now in a place where my two passions can unite. One of my other passions is creating mosaic maniacs! I’ve continued teaching mosaics for 25 years, children and adults both. Are you ready to get creative? Private lessons, small group classes, and mosaics on the road.
