Roman mosaics are often admired for their imagery and color, but the real structure lies in how the tesserae are placed.
In this one-hour talk, Roman mosaicist Lawrence Payne introduces the six practical rules of Classical Andamento, the working system Roman artisans used to organize thousands of stones into coherent, flowing designs.
Looking at mosaics from the maker’s point of view, the session explains how these rules developed, why they prevented visual disruption, and how their consistent use produced the calm visual harmony we now recognize as “classical andamento.”
Participants will be invited to follow simple drawing exercises during the talk and will receive downloadable crib cards summarizing the six rules.
