Color in Mosaic with Vera Belikova
Take a deep dive into colors to advance your skills to the next level with Maestra Mosaicista Vera Belikova, a graduate of the famous Spilimbergo Mosaic School. (click on the PDF link below for Vera's bio and credentials) Develop your eye for color palettes and get results that go beyond. Participants will explore the use of color, design beautiful color mixes, and create unique abstracts with gorgeous Italian smalti.
This is a unique opportunity you won’t want to miss. It is rare to have the chance to study the Spilimbergo method, as classes are not often taught outside of Italy, nor in the English language. To have a course offered right in our own area is even rarer! Due to an unexpected travel opportunity, Vera is able to offer her course to us here in Austin. This course will be especially valuable to those mosaic artists who are working with contemporary or abstract motifs, want to use smalti in their work, and expand their knowledge of how to use color theory effectively as it applies to mosaic art.
During the course you will learn how to turn a plain sketch into a vibrant, colorful mosaic. Participants choose from provided sketches in advance of the course, matching the complexity of a design to the level of their mosaic background. The instructor will guide you through the process of creating color in mosaic and you'll learn how to create beautiful color mixes that will help your work stand out.
The course offers:
- About one square foot of individual smalti mosaic under supervision of Maestra Mosaicista Vera Belikova.
- Unique abstract sketches elaborated specifically for the course, each made up of 3-5 smalti color mixes.
- Introduction into color theory for mosaics.
- Analysis of color mixes in three similar mosaics created by Vera especially for the course.
- Mosaic glossary (e.g. andamenti, tessera, interstice).
- Practical introduction into cutting of smalti with a mosaic hammer and hardie.
- Analysis of Roman, Byzantine and contemporary andamenti.
- Focus on the use of cement glue as a tool to create a vibrant, irregular surface.
- Unique smalti imported straight from the Italian furnaces of Donà Spilimbergo and Smalti Mosaico Morassutti.
- Printed handouts with all the key information.
