Biography
Phyllis Akmal began her mosaic education in 2009, but her passion for and interest in the art of mosaics began many years ago. Visiting and studying mosaic sites in Italy and Turkey have inspired her love for this ancient and intricate art. Phyllis has taken workshops and classes in Chicago, with visiting artists in Austin, and at the conference of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, of which she is a member. Also a member and Treasurer of the Austin Mosaic Guild, Phyllis has assisted with community mosaic projects including Barton Hills Elementary, Austin Montessori School and O’Henry School.
She says, “I am a patient and encouraging teacher and receive much satisfaction from instructing beginning students in mosaic skills, techniques and use of tools.” Her goal is to assist students to gain confidence, experience, and develop their artistic strengths. Phyllis instructs students in how to work with various materials including stained glass, tile, broken china, smalti, and tempered glass. She advises students how to select materials and translate a design into a mosaic while also learning the mechanics of mosaic construction.
